Why did I wait so long?

Last week I finally decided to make some organic playdough and I have no idea why I waited so long. Lovebug absolutely loves it and has played with it every day since!

There are all kinds of recipes online but we used this:

(1) cup organic whole wheat pastry flour
(1/2) cup sea salt
(3) tsp cream of tartar (didn't have any, so used baking powder)
(1) T organic coconut oil
(1) cup water

Mix the dry ingredients in a bowl while the coconut oil is melting on the stove. Then add the dry ingredients to the coconut oil. Slowly add the water and stir over medium-high heat. Once it has thickened into dough, lay it out on a lightly floured surface and knead for a little while. Then play, play, and play! :).

You could of course add food coloring too but we don't use any of that although I do want these natural food coloring powders sometime soon. I did also try a gluten free recipe with coconut flour but unfortunately I didn't have any luck with it. If someone has one they've had success with, please do share!

Our playdough has kept really well thus far! We had to knead in more flour a few days after making it because it was super sticky and yesterday it was a bit crunchy in some spots but that's probably because it was left out overnight. Oooops! :) Most nights though we've just been keeping it in an old ziploc bag we saved from somewhere and it's been working well. Oh and we've been laying out an old plastic tablecloth of my mom's on the table which works wonderfully for cleanup by the way.

Anyway, I forgot how much fun playdough is! I love it almost as much as Lovebug does :). I was able to save some playdough tools from my childhood actually, so those along with some Antique Weekend finds and inherited cookie cutters, we've been truly having a blast with the homemade playdough!

so fun, my little guy eats it - gross! my littel ones love clay too...it does make more mess than playdough but I love the natural earth factor to it.
