Weather & Watermelon

Well hello. So this is what Lovebug and I have been eating lately around our nest...yummy watermelon from our garden! I know, it's strange eating watermelon in November, especially with days like today. We woke up to dark and cloudy, then it was sunny, then rainy, then back to sunny, then cool, then cold! It was a weird weird day and a ton of leaves fell today which always mesmerizes me. Earlier, Lovebug and I were sitting down watching the rain and eating watermelon when I looked up and it was like all of a sudden I could really see a difference in the leaves. The colors are finally changing and it's such a beautiful thing. But yeah, watermelon in November feels very weird. :)

We're gearing up for a busy weekend of parties, get togethers, and my soccer team's final game of the season where we play for 1st place - I'm pumped! Have a good one.

Balance

Well we're back from the beach (it was INCREDIBLE - post to come) and this week was just so lovely! It was one of those weeks that felt like it had just the right amount of everything - a great balance of my work around the nest and Lovebug's "work" (playing, learning). It was wonderful because MOST days I feel like I get nothing done other than the playing, teaching, connecting, etc. (which is FAR more important of course than any nest work!!!). Then there are random days I get a good amount done but not enough playing and such happened with my precious girl. Not our days this week though...they were just perfect!!! Yesterday was especially fun as we caught up with a dear old friend and her precious kiddos, but also got a good amount of tasks taken care of as well.

We were able to get out to our garden some mornings this week which we both really enjoyed. We finally got our cucumbers out of the way a few weeks ago as they were looking pretty sad. The watermelon and honeydew have loved that and are trying to take over, but our okra and peppers are still going strong too! I really need to do a garden post sometime soon so you can actually see what it all looked like at its peak. We kept a tally of our bounty so I want to add that up and share that as well. Above are our finds from a recent morning. We have a good amount of peppers saved up now so my wonderful Love is going to make some of his yummy hot sauce this weekend.

Anyway, it was an incredible week and I'm ready for such a weekend with my two Loves! Have a great one!

Relax

This week was a busy one for Lovebug and I! We were gone much of every day except Friday, which was so nice to stay at home, recover, get some much-needed housework done, relax a bit, and just play. Above is a little bouquet of flowers I gathered from our herb garden. It smelled divine! I kept it in our kitchen for awhile and loved getting a whiff of it every time I walked by. It was so very relaxing.

Our vegetable garden is looking quite sad right now. The 100+ weather we've been having is definitely taking a toll on it and its complete end is near. :( Oh well. It provided us with some yummy veggies for many months and I think overall it did pretty good. I took some pictures last month when it was still doing well that I want to share with you soon. We have some big plans for it and our herb garden for the spring! I cannot wait!

How was your week? I'm so excited it's the weekend. I have three half soccer games today before the season starts which I'm pumped`about! Have a great one.

Feeding the world organically

A recent bounty from our organic garden...

There was an article in Organic Gardening I read awhile back that was a conversation with Michael Pollan (who's great of course). I found it really interesting, but especially this paragraph:

"But 'can organic feed the world?' is a question really up for grabs." He pauses. "The honest answer is, we don't know. I've seen research that suggests with really smart rotations and cover cropping, there is enough nitrogen to do it. I also think that if we changed our relationship to meat, we probably could. Half of all the grain that we're growing now is fed to livestock. If we were eating more food directly as plants, then we could feed the world organically. It really is the world's appetite for meat that forces us down that fossil-fuel path."

Very interesting, right? Most of you know we eat a 100% organic vegan diet at our nest so it's something we're very passionate about! I so wish all people around the world would have easy access to organic food.

So if meat is one of the biggest barriers to this, which I do believe, what needs to be done? Well first, you could go veg :). Or if you just really really love meat and/or truly feel like your body needs it, then why not treat it as just that - a TREAT. Have it once a week or a couple times instead of every day or at every meal. Many people have sausage for breakfast, turkey at lunch, and then chicken/beef for dinner. That's ALOT of meat people....way way way too much. Even daily intake of meat is too much in my opinion. The environmental effect of that is phenomenal but it can also be very detrimental to your health. People often question vegans/vegetarians about where they get their protein. When a healthy vegan/vegetarian gets a great amount of it, more than adequate actually. Whereas, the typical meat eater gets WAY too much and their bodies can't do anything with it. Instead, their livers have to try to excrete all of the excess which can cause damage. So just something to think about and research further...

Of course if you go with the second option and just minimize your meat intake, then for sure go ORGANIC and local if possible. Do a search for local farms where you can go tour and get a glimpse of how the animals are treated. You won't see everything obviously, but at least you'll hopefully get an honest look. No matter what the company advertises, you will never know how big farms treat their animals or what conditons they live in and I promise you that more than likely, you would be horrified.

Or even better than buying meat, go out and get your own meat, fish, etc. from out in some true wilderness somewhere! It takes some skills obviously, but this is a much more humane and healthier option in my opinion with much less of an environmental impact. IF you're going to eat animals, eating what you yourself catch, shoot, etc. is the way to do it!

OH and I really do think this whole theory also applies to other animal products as well - butter, eggs, animal's milk, etc. etc....if you really love them, treat them as treats and get the best/healthiest there is (local, organic, etc.)! If you don't really love those things, then why not take them out of your diet completely? I promise there are much healthier (and very delicous) alternatives out there! Many people say that organic is "too expensive". Well, if you cut out or even greatly lessen the amount of animal products you buy, I promise it makes an organic diet much more affordable!

So could we really feed the world organically if we changed our relationship to meat? I think it's truly a powerful idea...

We are busy getting things ready for a combo 4th of July/family birthday party. We're so excited to host a fun-filled day! I wish all of you a wonderful weekend and Independence Day with your loved ones!

Hello.

Is anyone still reading this?? I've gotten some sweet comments and emails from some folks out there (tu!) so I know at least a few people are still checking the ole' blog. It's been FOUR months since I've posted (wow!) and things have been busy, really busy...and good, really good. So much has happened and I'd love to share some of it with you all, but we'll see. I don't want to overwhelm myself by trying to catch up, but rather, just start from here and maybe, just maybe, I can share some of the things from the last few months with you at some point.

Right now, we are enjoying as much time outside as possible at very strategic parts of the day mind you...it is already hot here, very hot. It is definitely summer in Texas! Things would be more bearable if it wasn't for those darn mosquitoes. Anyway, we are working on lots of projects around our nest...organizing, cleaning out, giving away, selling, gardening, etc. etc. Things are feeling great around here, really really great. And we have lots of exciting things planned for the summer (and fall)...

We've also been enjoying a good amount of veggies from our front yard garden, which has been so fun! We all love going out there and seeing what is ready to be picked on a daily basis (the shot above is Lovebug showing off a recent day's bounty). I'll post some pics of our garden soon. It's just so rewarding to plan and make dishes/meals out of what we are growing right outside our front door.

Well I really hope to make time for blogging as I sure do miss it...I have tried my best to keep up with what's been going on with all of you even during my blog's inactivity.

If anyone else is still reading this, let me know. I'd love to hear from you! Be back soon hopefully...

Vegetable gardens at the White House

We just got back yesterday from spring Antique Weekend and had so much fun! More on that later though :). Today, I wanted to share this video I saw on Heather Jane's blog last week that I just loved. It's very interesting to see the history of vegtable gardens at the White House, isn't it? I'm excited and hopeful for the impact the Obama's organic garden will have on the country! Be back soon to share what we found...
