Whip 'Em Out!

Hi! We're at the beach right now but I wanted to schedule this video to post. I saw it on someone's blog last week and LOVED it. I may not love all of the names used for boobs in it :) but I do really love its message, its honesty, and its humor. After 2.5 years, I'm still a very proud breastfeeder!!! It really does help keep your little one healthy, happy, and it creates such an incredible bond that is beyond description. YES it's hard...it can be VERY hard in the first few weeks! But seek help (and lots of it if necessary), research, practice ALOT, and you and your baby will get the hang of it. I promise it does get easier, although it will ALWAYS have struggles and challenges (yes, even 2.5 years later), but it's SO worth it. It really really is. Anyway, I could write pages and pages on breastfeeding, but for now, I'll just let you enjoy the video!

Have a wonderful Labor Day weekend!!

Chef or Cook

Which do you consider yourself? I know by definition a chef is someone that cooks professionally, but I think there are alot of people that create incredible dishes at home that qualify to be called "chefs", no? To me, a chef is someone that creates dishes and meals (versus just following a recipe) and someone that knows and understands how flavors and ingredients blend and compliment each other. I also think knife skills help to further the chef title as well for some reason. What else do you think makes an amateur chef?

Myself, I'm definitely a cook because I HAVE to follow a recipe and I have little to no knife skills. But my Love, he has definitely become a chef that can create something incredible completely on his own. Take for example the amazing bean dish shown below that he came up with that we've been enjoying this week for lunches. He's got some serious knife skills too and I love seeing him work and create in the kitchen! Are any of your men the "top chefs/cooks" of your home or just love to cook? It's super hot, isn't it? :)

The dish was even better with some cornbread I made using a recipe OF COURSE :). It's from Veganomicon but I tweaked it just a bit. Although I think I've had better, it's really good and even more delicious with some coconut oil drizzled on it!

Vegan Corn Bread

(2) Cups - Almond Milk
(2) tsp - Apple Cider Vinegar
(2) Cups - Cornmeal
(1) Cup - Whole Wheat Pastry Flour
(1/4) Cup - Sucanat or Raw Sugar
(2) tsp - Baking Powder
(1/2) tsp - Salt
(1/3) Cup - Coconut Oil

Preheat oven to 350 F. I used a 9 x 13 inch glass baking pan but you could also bake it in a cast iron skillet too. Lightly grease the bottom and sides of the pan.

Combine the almond milk and apple cider vinegar and set aside. In a large mixing bowl, sift together the cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Create a well in the center and add the almond milk/vinegar mixture. Mix together until just combined (some lumps are ok). Pour the batter into the pan and bake for about 30 minutes, until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.

OH and I really think there should be a "Top Chef Amateurs" added to the Bravo lineup...wouldn't that be cool? I'd sign my Love up in a hearbeat. Well, have a great weekend.

Beans 3 Ways

This last week my Love made a delicious bean ball mixture that we put together three different ways for lunches. The bean recipe and marinara sauce are from Veganomicon, which is an amazing cookbook I highly recommend. We first had them as a sub with homemade bread and spinach, which was good but I didn't love the bread I made. It fell apart way too easily although it tasted pretty good.

Then we just put the bean balls on top of pasta, which was really yummy. We tried them with both penne and angel hair, but I'm a penne girl so that was my favorite. We ate them cold (we don't use the microwave and the oven makes our house so HOT) but some people might prefer them warmed up. The bean balls are pretty fun and I think little ones would really enjoy them!

For lunch yesterday we had extra bean mixture and some random other ingredients leftover from the week, so my Love wanted to do something different. He came up with these bean patties on top of a corn pancake finished off with some sliced avocado and a dollup of homemade salsa. It was SO good and incredibly filling! We have really missed Top Chef around here by the way and are pumped the new season has started but disappointed they're only on itunes now online :(. Oh well...at least we get to still watch them. AND thank goodness Project Runway is finally online this year - YEA! :)

Anyway, wanted to share the bean mixture we enjoyed three ways this last week. Have an INCREDIBLE Sunday! I'm so sad the weekend is almost over...I love my little family all together more than anything.

Food, Inc.

Here is the trailer for a new documentary out called Food, Inc., which is about the farming and food industry in our country...

Doesn't it look good? I cannot wait to see it! I found the following clip particularly interesting...

Personally, just the thought of fast food grosses me out, but it was interesting seeing this struggling family's perspective on what they choose to spend their money on. I know it was just a clip, but it didn't seem to make a proper comparison though. If you're weighing 3 pears vs. 3 hamburgers...well yeah, that pear isn't going to fill you up or satisfy you initially like the hamburger would, so you would spend your money on the hamburger. A more proper comparison would be something like beans and rice, which is very nutritionally dense and filling, as well as very very cheap. But anyway, I digress...

The way our country thinks about food really does have to change! People have to realize the importance of what they put in their bodies. We have to stop thinking "faster, bigger, cheaper, available year-round," etc. and start thinking "wholesome, nutritionally dense, organic, local, seasonal," and so forth! We have to. There are alot of people coming around and realizing the impact their food has on them (and the environment), but we have such a long long long way to go.

Alot of people still have a vision of their food coming from some small idyllic farm, which is so far from the truth in most instances. People don't realize the conditions, treatment, and often disgusting things used to grow/raise their food. More and more people are educating themselves though and truly purchasing with intent, purpose, and a conscience. This is especially important because, as mentioned in the documentary, when we buy something we truly are voting/supporting what we believe in.

Hopefully, Food, Inc. will help reach and inspire lots of people to make and demand changes, as well as serve as extra encouragement for the ones that are already aware and acting on it...

If anyone has actually seen it, I'd love to hear your thoughts and opinions!

Happy Friday my friends! This weekend we are doing some organizing and moving things around...Hopefully it will be both productive and relaxing! Have a good one.

Vegetable gardens at the White House

We just got back yesterday from spring Antique Weekend and had so much fun! More on that later though :). Today, I wanted to share this video I saw on Heather Jane's blog last week that I just loved. It's very interesting to see the history of vegtable gardens at the White House, isn't it? I'm excited and hopeful for the impact the Obama's organic garden will have on the country! Be back soon to share what we found...

The mother of slow food

I personally love Alice Waters and think she is amazing. She truly is a visionary and has done incredible things for this country! Thankfully, she isn't done yet and has many more things planned, such as the vegetable gardens at schools across the country and at the White House, which are both genius ideas. It would be so significant for the Obama's to decide to do away with the rose garden in lieu of a vegetable one and see their cute girls out there learning about compost and organic gardening. It would set quite a precedence, wouldn't it?

Some of my favorite parts of the interview are when they are at the incredible Slow Food Festival and they show the beautiful vegetable garden in front of city hall. How amazing! Then, this response from Alice when the interviewer talks about the high price of organics:

"We make decisions every day, about what we want to eat. Some people buy Nike shoes…2 pairs! And other people eat Brock's grapes and nourish themselves. I pay a little extra, but this is what I wanna do."

That is so very true. When we talk to people about organics, many of them say "it's too expensive" or "we can't afford them", but it really does come down to choices with what you choose to buy and what you don't, and within the vast majority of situations it's ALL about priorities. One of our top priorities is our health and the health of the environment. Thus, we do without other things so we can buy 100% organic all the time because we know it's worth it! Next post I think I'll share some things we do to maintain our 100% organic diet within a set budget...

The other part of the interview I enjoyed was when the interviewer was shocked that Alice didn't have a microwave in her kitchen. Well, we have one sitting unplugged in our laundry room but never use it (except as a resting place for rising dough:), so yes, it can be done! OH and the farmer's market footage had me so excited for ours to open here in the next month...I can hardly wait! What about you?

Anyway, I found the video inpiring and wanted to share it! I sure would love to someday eat at Chez Panisse that's for sure, and what an amazing thing it would be to sit down and chat with Alice. She's on my list...as is Jane Goodall. Alice truly is the mother of the slow local organic food movement and I cannot wait to see the further impact she has on this country!

Thank you Tiny Morsels for sharing the video.

Our own little "Australia"

This past weekend was a marathon of cooking, baking, and cleaning, but as usual, we were able to keep it fun despite all the busyness. We had a group of old friends from college over and it was so delightful seeing each and every one of them and catching up on what is going on in their lives. Lovebug absolutely adored meeting and playing with each of them, which was so fun to see. Hooray for lovely spring weather in Texas where you can actually eat outdoors BEFORE it's incredibly too hot and the mean mosquitos take over! Seriously. That cannot be overstated. It was incredibly enjoyable and I look forward to many more meals outside this spring under our trees and lanterns!

While cooking and baking, we were able to watch Australia which we just loved. Have you seen it? We haven't seen a movie at the theater in forever so I'm sure you all have seen it already, but if you haven't, go check it out. It's so epic and beautiful, and man oh man am I such a sensitive gal since becoming a mama. Anything that revolves little kids, I just tear up and that precious Nullah made me tear up quite a bit! Anyway, I highly recommend it even though it is quite long.

I found the dinner party and charity ball scenes in the film very inspiring. Each of them were full of beautifully hanging things - lanterns, light strings, and so forth. I tend to be a big fan of anything hanging really :), but these particular scenes were gorgeous. Last week before seeing the film, I had bought the above lanterns at Crate and Barrel for the party. I originally found them quite awhile ago here but was pleased when I could get the same ones at my local C&B (especially with the gift card I had:). They are solar powered with a white LED light inside and provide just the right amount of glow. We have left them up in the backyard and it's lovely that they just come on once it gets dark after absorbing the sun's rays during the day. Anyway, after seeing Australia I have big plans for a future event involving many more lanterns and other pretty hanging things. :) I can't wait! Of course, now it's raining cats and dogs here so we'll see how the lanterns actually hold up outside, but so far so good.

Well, spring is definitely in the air with leaves blooming and green popping up everywhere you look. Isn't it lovely? I hope wherever you are, you are enjoying all the first signs of spring as well and are soaking it all in outdoors as much as possible!

Truly inspiring

Thank you so much for the love on our baby gift creations. Your comments made my day for sure!

Well, to start off the weekend I wanted to share this video that my angler Love sent to me earlier in the week. I wasn't ready for how powerful it is and I just bawled, especially when Lovebug ran over to check on me and wanted to give me a hug :). This man is TRULY amazing! WOW!!!!!! Clay Dyer is such a hero in my eyes! Alright, it's a little over 9 minutes long but I promise it is SO worth it...and you might want to grab a tissue.

What is more inspiring than that man's life?! His motto is "If I can, you can". What spirit, determination, strength, passion, heart, and most of all, faith! I found it to be so incredibly humbling as I can sometimes complain about the smallest things.

I read somewhere about a mom that keeps a picture of Clay in her purse and whenever her children say they "can't" do something or something is "too hard", she shows them the picture of Clay. What a great reminder that we can overcome anything! I ran across his blog too and it is so positive and uplifting. I so wish further success for Clay, but according to him, he is already "living his dream". What an incredible role model Clay is for every single one of us!

I think we definitely all want what this man has, don't we?!!! Hope that encourages you in some shape or form! Have an inspired weekend!

Birth & Babywearing

Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend...ours was fun and productive! The weather here in Texas was enjoyably cold, which meant inside time organizing and drinking hot coffee and tea! There were a couple frustrations though that came to me via the great internet that I wanted to share, which involve two big passions of ours - natural birth and babywearing!

This NYT article ran last week on home births, and it's pretty positive overall I would say. What has been so disheartening though have been the response/comments to the article, or rather to home/natural birth, as seen at a couple different websites that Marvelous Kiddo linked to. I wish I hadn't read some of them honestly. They get me all worked up!

I feel so bad for many of the women that posted such vicious things regarding it. Most of the extremely negative ones are from women (or maybe girls I should say) who have never actually given birth. Some of the comments are so ridiculous they're hilarious (well, kind of, but also so very very sad). They cannot imagine that someone would want that "mess" in their home, they complain how annoyed they would be by a loud laboring neighbor, they say children would be traumatized by the moans (?), they say to "bring on the drugs", etc. etc. etc.

Like I said, pretty much every comment I read that was negative was by someone who has not given birth and was pretty much grossed out by the mere thought of doing so. These women (and some men) are so uninformed or misinformed and it saddens me greatly. I just wish people would truly educate themselves about their choices (and the consequences of them) before giving birth and making the decision where it's going to take place, which should be wherever the woman is MOST comfortable. For me, that would NEVER be in a hospital...too many unknown people, too many risks, too many germs, too many sounds, too many lights, way too many machines, drugs, and pressure, and not enough love, comfort, support, or intimacy.

Giving birth is a life-changing event and as such, really is something that deserves and requires a ton of research, thought, and prayer. If you have not already, I highly recommend renting or buying The Business of Being Born, Birth As We Know It, Birth Day, Birth into Being, Orgasmic Birth, and others at this website. Plus there are so many incredible books out there that need to be read while pregnant!!! Sadly, it seems most people get their misguided information and opinions on birth from movies and tv shows, which are all far far far from reality. Lovebug's birth was neither messy or loud by any means! It was peaceful, beautiful, and amazing...and I know many mamas whose experience was the same. The above dvd's all are reality - real-life mamas and real-life births, so check them out. Birth can be, as it was for me, incredibly empowering and that empowerment has extended to every other aspect of my life. I so wish and pray that every woman could experience that!

Anyway, it's been sad and disheartening reading the responses to the article, but I'm so glad the NYT decided to cover such a topic!

The other frustration was a Motrin ad campaign that was directed at babywearers...I'm sure most of you have heard about all of this by now, but you can read the ad copy here. It was just bad advertising and has made many of us babywearers (the target audience with the campaign) very mad. Following all of the blogosphere feedback, Motrin pulled the online ads, but unfortunately it's already in magazines. It makes babywearing sound like a new fad, something everyone is doing to stay "in fashion" or to be seen as an "official parent"...which isn't why anyone I know wears their baby and babywearing is certainly NOT anything new! :) It is also sexist as it's certainly NOT just mamas that wear their babies.

Further, babywearing is NOT supposed to be painful, but actually quite the opposite. It's supposed to offer a pain-free alternative to carrying or holding your baby all day. If you're experiencing pain, then you have the wrong carrier or are wearing it wrong. It also kind of questions whether or not babywearing actually promotes bonding, which it certainly does, as well as helps make breastfeeding easier and can soothe babies to sleep, amongst SO many other benefits! Anyway, what's most frustrating about it is that the ads put more misguided information out there for people to get a wrong idea of natural parenting methods.

BUT, here is something WONDERFUL...did you know that tomorrow is the last day of International Babywearing Week?? Well it is! So all you mamas and dadas, get out and proudly wear your babies! And HERE is a wonderful cause that the incredible local Peppermint Baby Boutique is helping with - it's called No Mother Left Behind which believes the MANY benefits of babywearing should be available to all mamas (and daddies) regardless of their financial situation. So send in any gently used baby carriers to either of them in honor of Babywearing Week or you can make a financial donation as well.

Let's all have a fabulous week!!!

OH and the pics are some babywearing favorites from the last year of my gorgeous Love wearing Lovebug, which he has been proudly doing since the day she was born.

Some Weekend Loves

Some things I am loving from this last weekend...

This creamy outfit her Daddy dressed Lovebug in yesterday! I'm adoring Baby Legs right now because they keep her legs warm without having to wear pants. Skirts and dresses are much preferable on Lovebug because pants are annoying (and bulky with CD's) and she doesn't love getting her dipes changed right now, so they make the whole process much quicker. They have some organic ones (their wool ones as modeled by Lovebug are so soft!) and they're cute!

My wonderful Gramma and family gathered to celebrate 80 years of her life!

The new album from Ray...this guy is good. No, he's great! He's one of my all-time favorites and this new album is beautiful. Same gorgeous music but some new sounds and instruments in there. I love me some banjo and steel guitar.

These pumpkin spice cookies from Rachel that I vegan-ed up along with a maple syrup icing inspired by Jessica. They don't look nearly as delicious as they are!

The cold front that came in last night. It felt absolutely beautiful out on my long evening run, and paired with Ray's new album playing in my ears, it was downright fun!

This cool website where those of us with no TV can watch the occasional show FREE as a special treat. Aren't Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin just genius together in this show? And gosh, why did Arrested Development ever get canceled? And aren't Holly and Michael perfect for each other?

These two. They are so sweet and funny together, and I love them more than anything.

Lentils, kale, and veggies together in a delicious winter soup my Love made.

The new deodorant, lotion, and soaps made yesterday. For the deodorant, I took the Angry Chicken's recipe and made it my own with lavender and peppermint EO's. The lotion is delicious which I posted about awhile back, but this time I added just peppermint EO and it smells divine - I could almost eat it!

Hope each of you have lots you are loving as well (please share!). Mondays are tough because I miss the weekend, but they're also a fresh start to another week which I also really enjoy. Lots to do - have a good one!

It goes by so quickly...

Promise I'm not going to start reviewing a movie every Monday, but we watched another documentary this last weekend that I wanted to pass along - Wordplay. It's a pretty fascinating look into the competitive world of crossword puzzles and all the incredible devotees to the NYT ultimate one. It kept us smiling and even laughing aloud at some parts - the real-life characters are almost straight out of an SNL skit. It was really inspiring to see how passionate they all are about the game. Anyway, if you want a light-hearted enjoyable movie, rent it and you'll for sure find yourself wanting to do a crossword puzzle afterwards:)! AND we enjoyed some yummy Coconut Bliss "ice cream" while watching it - it's a new find and is delicious! It's vegan, certified organic, made with healthy coconut milk and sweetened with agave nectar - YEA, finally a vegan "ice cream" that's not soy! It really is delicious - we found it at our local C-M. It says they ship overnight to your door though - just saying, it's THAT good!

Some big news on the Lovebug front - she's walking! WELL, she's taking steps. She took 4 on Friday and it's been many here and there all weekend - the most has been 5 consecutive, but it's just crazy because I swear that girl was just inside of me! She's growing up so fast. She ALSO started to talk alot more this last weekend...lots of gibberish and LOTS of "mama" as always, but we've got lots of "dada" and "baba" and "gaga" now as well which is so exciting. Such a sweet little voice too! Aaah, love it. We got some good silly pics of our Lovebug this last weekend that I adore, so I thought I'd share some!

Some errands were ran on Saturday, one of which was to Barnes and Noble - has anyone seen the new Boho magazine? Their first issue is out and I love it - it definitely is focused on fashion and beauty, but all green-minded. It's printed on 100% post-consumer paper and processed chlorine-free, which is so wonderful, and the whole design/look of it is beautiful. I found the articles to be well-written and overall very enjoyable, and it was nice flipping through a magazine without all the ridiculous amounts of wasteful advertising. I'm very interested to see their subsequent issues!

Afterwards, we headed to our fave Mexican spot for a little lunch. We even ate OUTSIDE because it felt so lovely while Lovebug amazingly slept - and Mommy/Daddy got to have some alone talk time :). It was nice. OH and we had our first video conference call with my dear sister in South Korea - it was wonderful (but crazy) seeing her beautiful face and hearing all about their new life there! The weekend was amazing, but went by way too quickly as always and now it's Monday...but I woke up early and got a good workout in, so I'm ready to face the week with all of its challenges and items on Lovebug and I's "To-Do-List"...and I know the weekend with my Love/Dada will be here before we know it.

Happy Monday all!

Aren't extended weekends the best?

Hope everyone had a wonderful extended weekend. We sure did - it involved a little this and a little that. Our walk one morning by the nearby lake was a highlight, as everything was so overgrown and lush. Another highlight was watching For the Bible Tells Me So, which is a powerful documentary that looks at homosexuality and the church. It is such an amazing, inspiring reminder of the unconditional love that we are to show our children. I definitely recommend it!

The weekend also included a couple other movies, another hankie pouch sewn for my brother's birthday, a little yoga, some house cleaning, a fun extended family dinner, a new haircut for my Love (which he had to finish himself b/c I couldn't do what he wanted me to do, so gone are his gorgeous waves - for now - and now he's got a sexy short cut:), and as always, some good food cooked by our nest's Top Chef (oh, and my cookies!)...It was delightful. Oh how I wish all weekends were that long.

Hope yours was just as delicious!

Where the Hell is Matt?

I'm at the beach NOT getting too much sun (hopefully:), but wanted to share this video I saw the other day...it's really uplifting to me and brought a smile to my face - shows how something like dance is so universal. Anyway, I found it inspiring!! Hope you enjoy!

A Little Princess

Sorry I did not get to post on Friday - I know my 10 or so readers were very disappointed :)...Seriously - it was a busy day, as was the whole weekend, but loads of fun. We decided to do a little blessing for our babe here in two weeks so there is lots on our to-do list, but isn't that one of the great things about hosting things at your house - that it forces you to get certain things done that you've been needing to for awhile?! But before we could move on to the blessing list, we had a family birthday party on Saturday for my Dad and our niece, which meant a good deal of baking and handmade present making. Think I'll divide it up into a couple different posts for this week to ensure they're not too long.

For our niece's present we decided to try our hand at some freezer paper stenciling, so got a couple of ribbed tanks from a local kid's resale store (fyi - ribbed material isn't the easiest to paint), ordered some supplies from Dharma, and away we went. My Love designed some cool stencils and we were pleased with how they turned out (went ahead and did two tees for our nephew's upcoming b-day as well). I especially love the above tree stencil he made!

Pretty sure we thought they were much cooler than our niece did, but she's five and really wanted to get back in the pool after she saw them, so we understood. Wish we had gone ahead and done a couple for ourselves and Lovebug too...someday soon (after the blessing:). Anyway, the fabric painting was quite fun!

A little birdie told me the birthday girl wanted a pink cake with a princess on top, so I made a vegan strawberry cake with strawberry icing from the Whole Foods recipe section, but used only whole wheat flour and it turned out really well, exept my icing melted a bit during the drive.

The "princess" was a clothespin doll I enjoyed making...used jute for the arms and embroidery floss for her hair, which didn't turn out exactly as I had wanted. My intention was to do a cute bob with bangs to mirror the birthday girl, but it somehow became something else during the creative process. The dress was my favorite part to make though! I am so excited about the new season of Project Runway which I thought could be downloaded from AOL Video like Top Chef was, as we no longer have any TV (which we're really enjoying by the way), but I haven't been able to find the Season 5 premiere yet :(...But anyhoo, that's what I kept thinking about while making the dress - PR - and what would Tim say about it?! :) Have a feeling he would say that it isn't flattering to her waistline, which I would have to agree with.

More birthday creations to come - Happy Monday!!!

End of an era...for now

So we had our last day of cable...it is no longer. We could not justify the cost of that luxury anymore (especially since there are only a couple of shows we actually watch on it) and saw it as another way of simplifying our life - getting rid of something else that is not necessary...

However, us foodies will miss our "Top Chef" (my pick was Antonia from episode 1 and Jonathan's was Richard...but Stephanie is awesome too - DON'T tell me what happened tonight - I don't want to know YET:)...DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THOSE ARE AVAILABLE ONLINE ANYWHERE? I looked on itunes and no luck! I'll miss the creativity on "Project Runway" for sure with Heidi's "we're going to have a chat", "one of you will be the winner, and one of you will be out", and Tim's "make it work!"...

I know we'll miss the Tennis Channel for when one of the "opens" is on...and the occasional decent movie that you can find on some random channel. Jonathan will miss Anthony Bourdain's travel/food show (and my "Nooooo Reservations" impression every time it comes back on -right honey?:) and a sport or fishing show from time to time, but other than that we don't watch much of anything else on any of the ridiculous number of cable channels we've been getting. We're followers of "Lost" and "The Office", but those are local channels so we're safe on those -whew - thank goodness!! First thing I did was unplug the receivers so they're not sucking vampire power ANYMORE (need to post on vampire/phantom power soon!) and put the TVs on a power strip so we can flip the switch when not in use...

So it's a bit sad but also exciting because we're really interested to see what we can do with that little bit of time some evenings we might spend in front of the TV...read, paint, crafting, projects, home remodeling (YEA!), and just overall more family time together. Not that you're not having family time when you're laughing over a show and sharing conversation about it, but you know, different family time -a greater quality of time I would venture to say...

Anyway, we're going to see how it goes...I have to admit though that it was really nice after little Miss was born to be able to find SOMETHING on while I was up nursing her during much of the night/morning, so we'll see if when baby #2 comes if a new era of cable begins :)! REALLY wish though that you could pick whatever channels you watch and pay for just those - but of course not - dang cable companies!

Oh yeah and these pics have nothing to do with the post, but since I'm a photo gal, I like pics with posts...but they are of me and my wee one playing in the grass which she loves oh so much - she's an outdoor gal for sure! We're relaxing/playing which...hmmmmm...IS something we can do more of now that cable is gone so maybe YES they are related to the post in a roundabout way :)!
